A splendid example of Lombard cabinetmaking from the mid-17th century, this chest embodies the rigorous and monumental taste typical of the Bergamo area. The furniture is made of solid walnut of excellent quality, characterized by a warm and deep patina that attests to its era and integrity.
Aesthetic Features and Carving
The front is a celebration of the Northern Baroque, punctuated by a rich but balanced decoration:
"Bambocci" pilasters: The corners are embellished with imposing anthropomorphic figures (putti or "bambocci") carved in high relief into the solid, which act as lateral telamons resting on elegant volutes.
Mouldings and Frames: The front panel is divided into three geometric compartments, framed by a refined guilloche (braided) pattern that runs along the entire upper and lower perimeter, enriched with original bronze studs.
Supports: The piece of furniture rests on sturdy stylized lion's paw feet ("stopped" feet), which give impetus to the imposing structure.
Hardware and Interiors
Handles and Mouthpieces: There are wrought iron and bronze handles on the sides and front, cast with shell motifs and female figures, consistent with the era and style of the furniture.
Interior Room: The interior is in excellent condition, lined with a yellow damask fabric that protects the original wood. There is the classic small side compartment ("box") typical of seventeenth-century chests, useful for storing precious objects or perfumes.
