Saint Sebastian cured by the Angel, oil painting on canvas, 17th century

Saint Sebastian cured by the Angel, oil painting on canvas, 17th century 7

Item description

Antique oil on canvas painting of rectangular format with vertical orientation, depicting Saint Sebastian Cured by the Angel. The work depicts St. Sebastian in the center, looking down with a suffering expression, his naked body covered only by drapery at the waist, pierced by several arrows. Around him, an angel is doing his best to help him, pulling out his arrows, untying his arms from the ropes that block them, healing his wounds or supporting his limbs. The scene is set outdoors among nature, and the artist places armor and quiver on the left, elements that recall St. Sebastian's military training. St. Sebastian: a soldier originally from Gaul who moved to Milan and enlisted in Diocletian's army, he converted to Christianity and took advantage of his position to help other Christians locked up in prisons, and for this he was sentenced to death by the emperor. He was tied to the column and subjected to martyrdom by shooting arrows: here he is depicted without his tormentors but with an angel treating his wounds (in popular tradition the saint's wounds were compared to those of Christ, which is why perhaps the artist painted more bleeding spots on his body). Very good condition. Provenance: Lombardy 17th century. With certificate of authenticity. We are at your disposal for further clarification or photographic details.
