The Death of Poppaea, Italian school, oil on canvas, 18th century
Old Italian painting from the 18th century. Oil painting on canvas depicting the death of Poppaea. Legend has it that Emperor Nero, after a violent quarrel, killed his wife with a kick in the abdomen. Poppaea was pregnant with his second son and according to some historians died in childbirth instead. A painting of exceptional size and impact, rich in characters and of excellent dynamism, for antique dealers, interior decorators and collectors of historical paintings of the high period. Lacking a frame, this work has undergone conservative restoration, re-staining, frame replacement and colour repainting in places. Ideal painting for a salon or studio, fabulous decor. In good condition with some signs of time.
