Item description
Bronze sculpture depicting woman's head with veil signed "V. Gemito" and characterized by the stamp of the Chiurazzi Gallery in Naples, early 20th century. Specifically, the woman depicted is Anna, wife of the artist. Vincenzo Gemito (Naples, July 16, 1852 - Naples, March 1, 1929) was an Italian sculptor, draftsman and goldsmith. Self-taught, for the most part, and intolerant of academic canons, Gemito formed himself by drawing from the alleyways of the historic center of Naples and from the sculptures in the archaeological museum. His prolific artistic activity, which brought him to the pinnacle of success at the Paris Salons in 1876-77, was interrupted due to an intimate intellectual crisis, as a result of which he segregated himself from the world for eighteen years; he resumed public life only in 1909, only to pass away twenty years later. Gemitian production includes vigorous drawings, terracotta figures and a large number of sculptures, all depicting popular Neapolitan scenes with high pictorial intensity; among his major works are the Pescatorello, the Acquaiolo (the original cast in silver is at the Cenedese Museum in Vittorio Veneto), the statue of Charles V on the facade of the Royal Palace in Naples, the Gypsy and self-portraits. Sculpture complete with certificate of authenticity.
