Oil on canvas depicting seascape attributed to Francesco Fidanza ( Rome 1747 - Milan 4 February 1819 ) eldest son of his father's school who went on to that of La Croix, one of Vernet's most renowned pupils. A talented painter, in Paris mainly, he was an interpreter of the emotive landscape style very much in vogue at the time. His work is combined with a lively sense of pictorial harmony, his restless atmospheres, rich in chromatic suggestions, represent an important moment of transition between the decorative Vedutism of the 18th century and the landscape of the Romantic season that opened up to realism and colour. In his paintings, Fidanza captures weather effects, storm surges, sea storms, snowfalls and sunsets in a blaze of clouds, tinting the canvas with the range of reds or mixing the blues of the waters with the whites of the foam, or creating the muffled, blurred atmosphere of snow. His characters, described by confident and brief brushstrokes, are integrated in an objective nature full of light and colour, set in a personal and delicate atmospheric sensibility, observed and rendered in particular luministic situations linked to the seasons, the time of day or sudden changes in the weather.
