Item description

Model 5559B dining/conference table, designed by George Nelson for Herman Miller starting in the 1950s. The structure is in white lacquered die-cast aluminium, with three-spoke pedestal legs that ensure stability and visual lightness. The rectangular top, in white laminate with exposed wooden edge, combines essentiality and refinement, typical of the American modernist language. The model was born as “Pedestal Extension Table”, originally equipped with removable extensions that can be stored under the main floor. Even in a compact configuration, it maintains a strong formal impact and great functionality, ideal for both a conference and dining table. The code “5559B” is imprinted in the leg casting, a detail consistent with the original Herman Miller production. Historical note – European productions under license In the years ’50 and ’60, Herman Miller entrusted the production and distribution of some iconic models to European partners such as Vitra (Switzerland) and ICF (Italy), to reduce shipping costs and customs duties. This explains the presence of official variants circulating in Europe. However, this example bears markings directly attributable to Herman Miller USA production. George Nelson (1908–1986) was an architect, designer and creative director, a central figure of the American Mid-Century Modern. Graduated from Yale, after a period in Europe he took over the design direction for Herman Miller in 1947, a position he held until 1972. Under his leadership, Herman Miller became a laboratory of innovation, involving designers such as Charles & Ray Eames, Isamu Noguchi and Alexander Girard. Among his iconic projects: the Platform Bench (1946), the lamps “Bubble” (1952), the system “Executive Office Group” and numerous tables and furnishings.
