Outstanding and original collection of 6 Japanese Kokeshi dolls. Have all the characteristics of this ancient form of Folk Art of northern Japan (Tohoku region): they are hand-carved hardwood (Itaya-kaeda, japanese maple) aged from 6 months to 5 years, they were treated with wax to protect the colors and give shine so they kept their patina, the vivid drawings on the body represent the Kimono, they have the enlarged head painted with a few lines to define the face, they do not have arms and legs. On the bottom are signed by the craftsman artist. They belong to the category of traditional (dento-kokeshi), the oldest (1900-1930) that were produced only in certain parts of Japan, in the prefectures of Miyagi, Akita, Iwate, Yamagata, differ greatly from those creative made after the Second World War. Each doll is a unique piece and different from the others, with their peaceful and sweet expression convey the passion and love with which the craftsman created them. It is said that the Kokeshi dolls were originally made by Shinchi Shuraku artists, during the middle of the Edo period (1600-1868) to be sold to people who were visiting the hot springs of Togatta. In Japanese homes the Kokeshi were used as very special ornamental elements, they were in fact considered to be of good wishes against bad luck, even today they are believed to represent affection, love, fidelity, happiness, and truth.
