The scene sees the old farmer sitting smoking his pipe in the kitchen, in front of the lit fireplace, while amusedly watching his grandson try to use the steelyard: on the ground the baskets of vegetables from their garden are being prepared for sale at the market.
In the production of the Florentine painter Adolfo Dumini we find many similar genre scenes, illustrating popular life with liveliness and joy, and a wealth of detail.
