A sculptural Murano ashtray or ‘vide poche’ made from heavy, solid glass, produced in Italy in the 1950s and 1960s. The square base is softened by gently curved, raised corners, giving the piece its characteristic mid-century silhouette.
Inside lies an intensely yellow-green uranium glass core, encased in clear glass, which lends the piece an extraordinary sense of visual depth. Under UV light, the uranium glass displays its typical bright green fluorescence. The substantial wall thickness and organic form make the piece particularly striking whether used as an ashtray, a vide-poche, a small bowl or a decorative glass object.
