Item description

French Napoleon III patinated and gilded bronze and marble clock depicting the allegory of summer, second half of the 19th century (1860-80). The white statuary marble base is adorned with gilt bronze applied decorations in a floral motif and rests on circular feet, also made of bronze. On the upper part is the figure of Ceres, maternal deity of the earth and fertility, tutelary deity of harvests, but also goddess of birth, since all flowers, fruit and living things were believed to be her gifts; a symbol in particular of summer, the season par excellence of harvests. In the composition, which is very harmonious despite its richness of elements, she is traditionally depicted as a young and beautiful woman, holding a sickle in her hand and wearing a crown of ears of corn on her head, which are also found at her feet. The gilding is of the galvanic type. The discovery of the galvanic technique began in 1791 when Luigi Galvani discovered the electrical fluid; this is why all electrolysis procedures are called galvanostegia, a term derived from the surname of the discoverer. Galvanic gold plating is in fact a type of electrochemical process that uses what is known as a galvanic bath: a thin layer of gold is adhered to a metal using electric current. This current carries positively charged gold ions and adheres to the metal, which instead has a negative charge; the result is that a uniform, thin layer is deposited. Mechanism to be reviewed.
