Allegory of the Arts, oil on canvas, 17th century
Oil on canvas. The painting is large in size, reminiscent of 17th century painting methods but is of a later date, and was made on a canvas applied over an older one. It depicts the allegory of the arts, presented in the guise of a rich young girl who, in her studio, is intent on painting, while on her sides two other young women are leafing through musical scores and, on the right, a young man with a chisel and hammer in his hands, is devoting himself to sculpture. The scene is rich in detail, especially in the description of the clothing and jewellery of the woman in the centre, as well as in that of the fabrics decorating the room, the rich brocades covering the seat, the table, the curtains. The painting has an obvious patch in the bottom right-hand corner. The painting is presented in an antique gilded frame.
