Oil on canvas depicting "The resurrection of Lazarus", 18th century
Description: The Resurrection of Lazarus depicts an evangelical scene which is a prelude to the resurrection of Christ himself. Lazarus sustained outside the tomb, opens his arms to the voice of Christ who calls him and extends his hand towards him. He cries Marta and Madalena is amazed, in the upper left there is a man who puts his hand to his nose to protect himself from the stench .. Here the artist also depicts the most unpleasant aspects of life, and therefore makes us understand that stench that is remembered in the Gospel, when Martha tells Christ that her brother Lazarus, already laid in the tomb, has been dead for four days. The work is a perfect synthesis of emotion and devotion, with the characters in the foreground highlighted by skilful strokes of light against a light background that reveals the architectural setting of a castle with a city behind it. Christ, with his face in shadow and his hand pointing towards Lazarus. The face of the central character, turned towards Christ, with his mouth half open and his brow furrowed, highlights the amazement for the miracle, that is the moment of passage from death to life in the body of Lazarus, which still appears rigid, but with his arms open to signifying the future crucifixion and resurrection of the son of God.
