Item description

A splendid and exceptional contemporary pair of important sacred icons on wood dating back to the 19th century. The pieces are distinguished by their medium-large format (approximately 30 x 20 cm) and their extraordinary mounting and finishing. Unlike icons with a partial metal covering, here the imposing embossed antique brass frame acts as a "shell," or deep perimeter casket. This system allows for full-length views of the sacred scenes and the bodies of the protagonists, entirely painted on the underlying wooden panel. The frames feature rich relief decoration with floral motifs and leaf twigs, framing the paintings with a strong three-dimensional feel. The back of both icons reflects the craftsmanship of the Tsarist era: the panel is entirely lined with the original red velvet fabric, from which the flared edges of the brass shell protrude slightly. The pair consists of an icon depicting the classic and beloved devotion of the Madonna and Child and a second icon centered on the venerated figure of Saint Nicholas, portrayed alongside other saints. As two coordinated pieces created together, they retain maximum historical, aesthetic, and collectible value. Perfect for enhancing elegant spaces, studios, or private collections of sacred art. An exceptional and rare matching pair of antique sacred icons on wooden panels, dating back to the 19th century. These pieces stand out due to their generous medium-to-large format (approximately 30 x 20 cm) and their magnificent, high-quality craftsmanship. Unlike common icons where the metal overlay covers the figures, these examples feature an impressive, deep brass frame that acts as a protective casing or "box" around the perimeter. This unique design leaves the sacred scenes fully visible, showcasing the saints painted in their entirety on the wooden panels beneath. The heavy brass casings are beautifully decorated with high-relief repoussé work featuring rich floral motifs and elegant leaf vines that create a striking three-dimensional effect. The reverse side of both icons reflects the high-quality craftsmanship of the Tsarist era: the wooden panels are fully lined with their original red velvet fabric, which gently shows through at the outer corners of the brass casing. The first icon depicts the timeless and beloved iconography of the Madonna and Child. The second icon features the revered figure of Saint Nicholas alongside other holy saints. Having been created and kept together for nearly two centuries, this coordinated pair retains the highest historical, aesthetic, and collectible value. They are the perfect addition to upscale interiors, private libraries, or fine collections of sacred art.
