Item description

Classic and large English porcelain water jug; elegant and rich blue decorations have been executed on a white background with the "transferware" method; while the other ornamental motifs in pure gold were all made by hand. The jug has a slender shape and a wide base to ensure stability, the design as a whole is elegant and detailed. The comfortable handle is decoratively shaped to match the pitcher's overall design, a marriage of sophistication, stunning ornamental detailing, and craftsmanship. The pitcher was created between 1880 and 1890 in a craft workshop in Staffordshire, England. Staffordshire is an English county known for its long tradition of pottery production; is famous for having produced different types of porcelain over the years. There were many famous manufacturers in its area (Wedgwood, Spode, Minton, Royal Doulton, etc.) who have contributed to its legacy over the centuries. Transferware refers to ceramic or porcelain glazed and decorated with a specific treatment that they made in Staffordshire in England. Copper plates were used on which the design was engraved, the plate was then inked and the design transferred onto a special fabric which was then placed on the ceramic (plates, jugs, trays, tureens, etc.) which was glazed and fired. The first to use this printing process were John Sadler and Guy Verde of Liverpool in 1756. If we look at the ceramics made with this method we will notice that the drawings are not perfect and often the ink is smudged; this is their feature. A hand painted dish set could afford few English families, with this method even middle class families could have a decorated dish set and other items executed in this method. Today, Victorian porcelain jugs are highly prized by antique enthusiasts and collectors. They can be displayed as decorative pieces or used to pour liquids such as water, juice or tea. The jug has nice crazing all over the body which attests to its age and authenticity. On the inside, towards the spout, there is a darker area with speckles due to prolonged use over time. Under the base it has a chip (see photo) which remains invisible when the carafe is placed upright. Measures width 30 cm, depth 20 cm, height 31 cm. For all our shipments we use special packaging materials (custom wooden crates, polystyrene, etc.) for maximum protection and safety of the objects.
