A typical example of Grand Tour painting, the work depicts a view of the Gulf of Naples enlivened by numerous boats, including in the foreground one of fishermen landing on the beach, where their wives and children are waiting; Vesuvius smoking in the background. The scene is lively because of the vitality it expresses and the colors, although the pinkish hues of the sky and Vesuvius evoke the romantic note characteristic of painting of the period.
