The wide and airy landscape, pervaded by a timeless 'classical' atmosphere, is part of the classical current of ideal views of the Roman countryside, introduced in Rome with great success during the 17th century following the example of Carracci, Domenico, Albani and the French Poussin, Dughet, Lorrain, and continued in the following century by artists such as Andrea Locatelli. These types of landscape paintings aimed at extolling the principles of beauty, reason, order and measure typical of the classical world, celebrating the value of history, the trust inherited from the ancients in the virtues of man and his possibilities. In the nature of these landscapes, which is not abandoned to chaos, but is composed, ordered, unperturbed by violent or disordered elements, are the human figures, dressed in the antique style as in this painting, in which a couple dressed in classical tunics converse amiably while sitting (or rather, half-sitting almost as if they were on a triclinium) in the midst of a shady, verdant countryside, near a tranquil little river; the buildings of a city can be glimpsed in the distance and the gaze then loses itself in the orderly and tranquil continuity of the gentle hills of Lazio.
