Item description

Antique Italian painting from the 17th century. Oil painting on canvas depicting a splendid Madonna and Child with St. John. Painting of the Tuscan school of remarkable pictorial quality, particularly noticeable in the drapery and the Virgin's hands. The painting presents a pyramidal composition with a baby Jesus standing while St. John holds out to him a goldfinch, a symbol of passion. It is said that a goldfinch had attempted to remove the crown of thorns placed on Christ's head and had pierced itself, indelibly staining itself with Jesus' blood. 20th century carved and gilded wooden frame with a fascinating Greek motif, with some signs of time. Work that has undergone restoration with re-staining, replacement of the frame and repainting in small places, overall in good state of preservation. Light painting H 72 x W 58 cm.
