Oil on canvas.
The scene depicts an episode from the 17th century novel "Les Aventures de Télémaque" (The Adventures of Telemachus) by François Fénelon, published in 1699.
In Fénelon's story Telemachus (son of Ulysses) while searching for his father accompanied by Mentor (under whose guise the goddess Athena hides), he is shipwrecked on the island of Calypso and here he falls in love with a nymph.
The goddess Calypso, who welcomed them, to prevent Telemachus from leaving the island by abandoning the girl, orders her nymphs to burn the ship on which Telemachus and Mentor had arrived.
In the painting presented, on the left in the foreground Mentor urges the young Telemachus to turn around and leave, who is instead still looking at the girl standing on the path on the right; Meanwhile, the other nymphs set fire to the boat with their torches, stranded on the shore.
The canvas, which had already been relined in the past, shows several color drops.
It is presented in a stylish frame.
