Item description

Original Thonet chair Herbatschek series no. 243711 with square seat made of black lacquered beech wood and Vienna straw. Excellent condition, no restoration, the chair has never been used for sitting. Designed to ensure even load distribution, the wide seat and ergonomic backrest contribute to high comfort. The Thonet chair fits perfectly in any environment thanks to its timeless, classic design that will give your room a unique and cosy style. In 1970, the chairs were marketed by the company Herbatschek, which was supplied by a former Thonet factory in Poland. Herbatschek was already a dealer for Jacob & Josef Kohn in the early 20th century in Milan. After the war, in the confusion that followed the separation of the brand name between Piltzer and the Thonet family, this dealer continued to sell chairs under the Thonet brand name by purchasing them from the factory in Poland, until he had a lawsuit with Thonet France claiming the use of the brand name. From then on he began to brand the products under the Herbatschek name. At the end of the 1980s he closed the warehouse and the business in Milan. Michael Thonet's motto 'bend or break' derived from the stubborn desire of this brilliant German carpenter to bend beech wood to make everyday objects such as chairs. After a period of intense experimentation and several broken branches of wood, Thonet succeeded. He discovered that, in order to soften the wood fibre, which is naturally elastic, it was necessary to soak it in a steam bath at 104° (for six hours), then bend it (with the strength of four workers) and let it dry through an iron form (for another two days at 70°). After several attempts, he thus created the perfect chair: the Thonet No. 14 with a curved backrest and woven straw seat, a classic model that was popular all over the world and exhibited in the world's major design museums such as the MOMA in New York or the Vitra Museum. in Germany. The year was 1859.
